Tracking Browse Rate - A Cool Stickiness Metric

March 31st, 2006

I was digging around in our IndexTools account today for the SEOmoz site and came across a nifty column that I had previously ignored called “browse rate”. It shows, based on the entry page the visitor came to the website on, how many pages (on average) they browsed. This metric is great for determining how effective your pages are at pulling people into the website.
Here’s some stats for SEOmoz:

You can see how folks who entered on the Web …

Basically, you create your WeeMee and then you can go and chat live in this room with other WeeMees. We can talk…

Paid Links Under Fire… Again

March 30th, 2006

So Matt’s comments yesterday (he didn’t pay me for a link, so I’m afraid I can’t give one out) set off a treasure trove of commentary about the use of paid links. Matt’s contention:

Yes, if you sell links, you should mark them with the nofollow tag. Not doing so can affect your reputation in Google.

Let me point out just a few of the reasons why this is a ridiculous statment

Google should not have any influence on how markup is controlled. They are completley out of their jurisdiction in making this request._
“Nofollow” was…

The Ask.com Commericals

March 30th, 2006

I’m wondering what people’s general opinion of the new Ask commercials are.

Do you find them enoyable? amusing? annoying?
Do you think they’ll effectively brand Ask.com in the minds of consumers?
Do you think they’ll increase traffic to the Ask domain?
Any idea what their media budget on those is? They seem fairly ubiquitous on primetime and cable channels.

My personal take is that they’re engaging enough to get people thinking about search and about Ask, but they don’t have the revolutionary push that would shift people’s mindsets away from Google. I…

Slate’s Paul Boutin on Web 2.0

March 30th, 2006

Just to stick with the relevant topic of the week - Paul Boutin wrote a colum yesterday covering his personal opinion of Web 2.0 now that, according to him, Newsweek has used the phrase without quotes for the first time in mainstream media.

Beyond that, publicists and self-promoters invoke Web 2.0 whenever they want to tag something as new, cool, and undiscovered—”This could be a big story for you, Paul!” That kind of hucksterism is what sends editors reaching for their red pens. Prior to Newsweek’s feature, the term “Web 2.0″ only appeared in national pub…

Most of you have probably read Matt Cutts’ answers to his Monday Q and A thread, but I like to document things for the future.  I often come to my own site here to search for a phrase that I know I have discussed before, but can’t remember much about it.  So, here’s a few […]
