SEO & e-Business: New (free) Video

August 30th, 2006

Andy Jenkins and Brad Fallon are getting ready to launch the new version of their “Stomping the Search Engines” course, which has generated a little excitement around the world of the web already. The official launch date isn’t until late in September, but they’re releasing some stuff now, including a free online video.

I’m still waiting for my box of DVDs to arrive so I will have a more in-depth

Marketing: Go Get An Action Plan

June 26th, 2006

Found a great website this morning, via a post by Chris Allen in the LED Digest. Robert Middleton’s Action Plan Marketing is primarily focused at service professionals, but a lot of the information in his free samples would be useful for anyone.

I’m looking forward to receiving Robert’s newsletter, and the fact that I didn’t get an issue as soon as I subscribed reminds me of yet another item

SEO: A Solution For Handling Flash Better

June 17th, 2006

Most readers are probably well aware that there are some issues with Flash and SEO… but many folks actually believe that there is some sort of ranking penalty or other major drama that ensues for those who use Flash.

The problem with Flash as “content” for search engines isn’t that search engines can’t read them. The major search engines can all read Flash files.

The problem is pretty simple:

Link Building: Are Bloggers A Bunch of Morons?

June 3rd, 2006

In the first week of my link building class (Flash video), I go over a spectrum of “link types,” based on the idea that search engines really want to see natural links of pure love, those that are created by web authors who really like the web resource (site, page) they’re linking to.

There’s another type of link, though, that probably counts for just as much in boosting the authority of a web

SEO: What’s Up, Big Daddy?

June 1st, 2006

Posted (and updated) from last week’s SEO Coach newsletter:

What’s Up, Big Daddy? How Google’s latest move affects you, me, and them

With all the talk (and occasional hysteria) about Google’s “Bigdaddy” update, I thought readers could use a little …

Adsense: What The Eye Tracks Gets Clicked?

May 31st, 2006

Marketing Sherpa published a very interesting little book called the Ecommerce Benchmark Guide 2006 that contains some interesting information on eye-tracking studies. One of the nice little tidbits contained therein is a study showing that people’s e…

I’ve been using Constant Contact for my newsletter mailing list for quite a while, but unfortunately I need to find another service to handle it… here’s why:

SEO: Create A Google Sitemap

May 11th, 2006

Google rolled out their Sitemaps service last year, and if you haven’t checked it out, you’re missing something really cool. If referrals from organic search results are an important part of your online business, you need to use this service.

If you wonder why so many people think Google is really cool, take a look at what they give webmasters for free, and compare it to what you pay for with

SEO: My Secret To Handling Link Exchange Requests

April 20th, 2006

One thing for today: locate the delete key on your keyboard. Yes, my secret to handling link exchange requests is to delete them, 999 times out of 1000.

If you don’t delete them, be very careful about which ones you accept. Linking to anyone and everyone is a recipe for trouble. Search engines have a low opinion of certain types of site, especially those offering bulk email (spam) software,

SEO: Where’s Your Home Page?

April 13th, 2006

Okay, one quick thing for today that a lot of sites have gotten wrong. Start by answering this simple question: What’s the URL for your home page?

Your answer is probably something like http://www.example.com/

Okay, now go look at your website. I’m sure you have lots of links to your home page from all over the site. There should be one on every page, right? Now, answer the next question - is

SEO Success Story: American Bridal On Top

April 13th, 2006

One of the most gratifying things about being an SEO teacher, instead of just an SEO consultant, is that I get to see students learn, grow, and succeed in their efforts. When one of my students takes what they’ve learned and has great success, it puts a smile on my face and gives me a little extra energy to keep doing what I do.

Shirley Tan of American Bridal attended my 10 week “SEO Your Site”

SEO: Are Your Title Tags OK?

April 11th, 2006

Today’s post is a good example of what happens if you aren’t playing the game right. Instead of posting first, I checked my email…. and I never got free all day long to just write a post. The funny thing is, I actually answered two emails with questions about title tags today, when I could have just referred them to this post. Funny. Not really.

One thing for today - if you aren’t making the

Analytics: If You Aren’t Measuring, You’re Wasting Your Time

April 10th, 2006

If you aren’t measuring and analyzing what visitors do on your web site, you aren’t really running a web site. Oh sure, you have a website, but you aren’t managing it unless you’re measuring what happens, and taking action to improve your website’s performance.

One thing for today: if you don’t have any kind of analytics program in place, do something about it. In fact, if you’re playing the “box

Conversion: Make Your Links Work Harder

April 7th, 2006

In my experience as a consultant and coach to a lot of hard-working people, one of the most common issues is the poor use of internal links. There’s one thing you can do today that will improve your web site’s profitability - make your links work harder.

Since I’m trying to give you ideas that you can act on quickly, with immediate results, I will start with the one thing that has proven to be

New Beginning, 1 day at a time

April 7th, 2006

This post represents a new beginning for the SEO coach blog. It’s been months since my last post, and it’s time to get back in the saddle. My intent for this blog remains the same: to provide practical, actionable advice for people trying to make the most out of their websites, with a focus on SEO and search engine marketing.

Today, I am beginning a series of posts with a very simple concept. One

Sad News

December 15th, 2005

Myla Kay Marks, my long time friend and business partner who was our lead consultant for keyword research, passed away on Sunday morning after a long illness. Memorial services will be held this Saturday, December 17, 1pm at the Church of the Epiphany in Houston, TX.

I’m sorry to bring anyone down, but a lot of folks around here have worked with Myla and gotten to know her. I’ve decided to just

Conversion: The Feng Shui of Home Pages

November 2nd, 2005

Feng Shui is an old Chinese pseudo-science, which deals with the layout of cities, buildings, and other things. How things are arranged is supposed to have an impact on many other things.

I don’t know if the whole thing is literally true, but I do know that my wife and I rearranged our bedroom furniture a couple months ago, and for whatever reason, we are actually sleeping better these days. Gina

SEO: Controlling Entry Pages

October 25th, 2005

One of the most important aspects of keyword strategy for search engine optimization is getting the right search terms onto the right page. Among many things, my team does keyword research and discovery for a lot of websites. This is an important first step, but too often we see folks take our report, pick the search terms they think they can get ranked for right away, and stick those search terms
